Idlib, SMART

On Wednesday, the opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) allowed for the evacuation of 15 injured people from the towns of Kafarya and al-Fou’a, 5 kilometers north of Idlib, Northern Syria. In return, the Syrian government and its supporting militias released four prisoners from their prisons, as a "gesture of goodwill".

A source in the HTS reported that they allowed the evacuation in return for the release of a HTS captive, a fighter of the al-Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement, and two civilians from the cities of Darkoush in Idlib and Hama, central Syria.

The evacuation comes as a part of the HTS' s agreement with Iran to evacuate all residents from the besieged towns, in return for the release of 1,500 prisoners and dozens of military captives from Syrian government prisons.

A source that is well informed about negotiations reported that Iran agreed on negotiating with the HTS, following the latter's intention to launch a military campaign against the towns. The source noted that the negotiations took place through phone calls between the two.

Earlier, the HTS reached agreements with the Syrian government over the fate of the two towns; however, the most recent agreement included the evacuation of some residents of the towns in return for the evacuation of the HTS fighters from the al-Yarmouk camp towards Idlib.
