Idlib - SMART

On Thursday, landmine explosions planted by loyalist forces militia in the villages of Kufriya and al-Fo'a, 5 kilometers north of Idlib, Northern Syria, killed a member of the Ahrar al-Sham Islamic Movement, and wounded two others while they were opening the roads to the two towns.

Local activists said that a landmine planted by the loyalist militia in Kufriya town killed a member of the Ahrar al-Sham. A similar landmine explosion wounded a paramedic and a bulldozer driver while they were opening a road towards the town of al-Fo'a.

Activists issued warnings to residents to not enter the two towns before the demining operations are complete. The Salvation Government issued a pre-emptive circular to prevent anyone from getting close to the vicinity of Kufriya and al-Fo'a, until the engineering teams remove the mines. Anyone who does enter will do so at their own risk.

Activists were concerned about the presence of large numbers of mines in the vicinity of the two towns, planted throughout the previous years. In addition, they were concerned that there may be some residential areas and properties, which were booby-trapped in the days leading up to the evacuation of the towns' residents and Syrian government militias.

The last group of buses carrying residents of the towns of Kufriya and al-Fo'a went towards the exchange point in the area of al-Iss, south of Aleppo. Buses carrying detainees from the Syrian government's prisons began towards Idlib.

About 120 buses entered the two towns to evacuate the families and fighters as part of the agreement between the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Iran. About 6900 civilians and fighters are supposed to leave the towns, according to the agreement.

The HTS has already concluded agreements with the Syrian government over the fate of the two towns. The last agreement included the evacuation of a number of the town's residents, in exchange for the evacuation of HTS members from the al-Yarmouk camp in Damascus towards Idlib.
