France, SMART

On Monday morning, Syrian oppositionist actress Mai Skaf died in ambiguous circumstances in the French capital of Paris.

Activists mourned Skaf’s death on social media as her friend in Paris actor Fares al-Hilo posted saying,”Let me mourn to tell you of the Syrian actress Mai Skaf’s death from a heart attack(...) what a sad and painful loss!”

Minutes later, al-Hilo modified the cause of Skaf's death to "ambigious circumstances."

Writer and journalist Deema Wanoos, who is Skaf’s nephew, posted on Facebook saying, "Me and family are in a very difficult psychological situation…yes, Mai died and we lost her along with other painful losses…may we and you all be patient…I will never forgive those responsible for Skaf’s death…Skaf died in ambiguous circumstances..we are waiting for the outcomes of the investigation.”

Two days before her death, Skaf posted on her Facebook page saying, "I will never lose hope….I will never lose hope...it is great Syria, and not Assad’s Syria.”

Skaf died at age 49. She participated in the early peaceful uprising of the Syrian Revolution in 2011. The Syrian government arrested her for participation. Later, Skaf left Syria for Jordan, then Paris.

Skaf, who appeared in dozens of dramas, is known for her pro-Syrian Revolution position and keen participation in anti-Syrian government and President Bashar al-Assad activities in Paris.

In August 2017, Skaf delivered a touching speech at the funeral of her oppositionist colleague Fadwa Suleiman, who died in Paris as well.
