France - SMART

On Tuesday, a major fire broke out in the Zaatari camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan as firefighters tried to extinguish it.

An activist in the camp told SMART that the fire broke out in six shops in the Zaatari camp market. Firefighters were having difficulty controlling the fire and feared it would spread to other nearby shops.

The activist added that they used six water tanks to extinguish the fire, but failed because of high temperatures and intense sunlight since the morning.

The activist explained that the cause of the fire was a piece of flammable restaurant equipment that set fire to a wall shared with neighboring shops. The initial estimated loss is about 400,000 Jordanian dinars.

The activist added that the fire left a giant black smoke cloud but did not lead to injuries among the refugees, except for one shop owner who consciousness after losing his only source of income.

Four people died and others were injured in the Zaatari camp in March 2015 when a fire broke out in their mobile homes. More than 40,000 refugees who fled the bombing of the Syrian government live in the Zaatari camp.
