Turkey - SMART

UNICEF has fired hundreds of Syrian teachers in the al-Zaatari camp for Syrian refugees in Northern Jordan. Observers consider UNICEF's actions as putting pressure on Syrian refugees to return to their country.

A teacher in the camp, who introduced himself as Yasin, said that officials from UNICEF met with the teachers and informed them of the decision to fire the Syrian teachers from the camp's schools.

Yasin stated that 900 Syrian teachers were fired, as well as other employees whose services will be terminated by the end of the year.

A teacher, who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons, commented that although UNICEF officials justified their decision, she still considers this as putting pressure on Syrian refugees to return to their country.

The teacher added that Jordanian teachers will remain in their positions, because the Jordanian Ministry of Education is responsible for paying them, according to the officials.

The UN and humanitarian organizations warned of a huge gap in the support for Syrian refugees and their host countries, which threatens the stability and future of the refugees in these countries.

Jordan has made it clear that it cannot handle the Syrian refugee crisis. It also refused to open the border for tens of thousands of refugees escaping from battles and bombings during the Syrian government's latest campaign in Southern Syria.
