Deir ez-Zor, SMART

On Tuesday, the Islamic State (IS) arrested one of its own commanders and his followers in the city of al-Shou’fa in Deir ez-Zor, Eastern Syria.

A source reported that the IS security services arrested an IS commander called Abu al-Nur al-Maqdisi along with seven of his followers. The IS accused al-Maqdisi and his fighters of approaching "extremism" and wishing to excommunicate the IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi while calling him a non-believer ("kafir").

The source added that the IS will present the detainees to IS Sharia judges to discuss the detainees' beliefs. The source noted that the IS will execute the detainees if they insist on their belief that al-Baghdadi is a non-believer.

Abu al-Nur al-Maqdisi is of Jordanian origin and was a student of a senior IS official called Abu Ali al-Anbari.

Months ago, a dissident group emerged out of the core of the IS. Abu Shuaib al-Hadrami lead the group, which believes that the jihadi doctrine of al-Baghdadi and some of his first class commanders has collapsed and that their policies contribute to the weakening of IS' power in Syria and Iraq.
