Hama - SMART

Fifteen thousand people do not have drinking water in the villages of the al-Ziara district, Hama, Central Syria, coinciding with the high prices and difficulties to secure the water.

A member of the Hama Governorate Council, Musab al-Ashqar, said that half of the al-Ziara district residents suffer from the lack of water, even though organizations have established pumping stations in the wells of Qlidin, Zeizoun, and Qastoun.

al-Ashqar added that the residents buy water from mobile tanks, for 4,000 Syrian pounds per 5,000 liters. Some buy well water for 400 SYP per 1,000 liters, which is the price of gas needed for the generators.

The local councils in the Free Syrian Army and Islamic factions-controlled areas in Hama suffer from the lack of support. The lack of support disables the local administration from implementing its service projects.

Pollution has spread in springs and irrigation canals of the farmlands of al-Ziara, due to littering and the absence of services. In addition to infection, the Syrian Government bombing prevented planting 40 acres in the district villages.
