Hama - SMART

Civilians demand the Syrian government forces to allow shops to stay open at night in the city of Hama, Central Syria. The civilians believe it will decrease crime in the city, which increased due to the lack of regulation by the Syrian government security services.

On Thursday, local sources reported that Hama residents submitted a request to the governor of Hama to keep shops open during the night, especially in the markets of Ibn Rushd, al-Dabagha, al-Taweel, and al-Murabit. The residents also posted their demands on social media.

The residents justified their demands by pointing to the increase in theft and kidnappings after 6:00pm amidst the lack of effort from the Syrian government security forces to prevent the crimes.

The local sources added that shops currently open at 10:00 am and close at 5:00 pm, crippling their business with the exception of some restaurants and cafes that stay open after 5:00 pm.

The sources noted that shop owners prefer to close at 5:00 pm, because hiring workers to work evening shifts is more expensive and they prefer not to work long hours.

Thefts and kidnappings have become common in the city of Hama, and members of loyalist militias have been involved in the crimes. The Syrian government forces' security services also patrol the city at night searching for youths for compulsory military recruitment.
