Idlib - SMART

Several military sources report that major opposition factions operating in Northern Syria have agreed to form a new military body, similar to Jaysh al-Fateh, in the area.

A military source from the Ahrar al-Sham Islamic Movement said that the factions reached an agreement to form a unified operations room, similar to the Jaysh al-Fateh operations room, and using the same name, to block advances by the loyalist forces.

The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, assumes that the new Jaysh al-Fateh operations room will include the major opposition factions operating in the area, including the Syrian Liberation Front, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Suqur al-Sham and other factions. He added that the announcement of the formation will probably take place in the next hours.

A media source from the Jaysh al-Ahrar confirmed the agreement, saying that it does not compel the factions to unify under a new formation, but to form a unified operations room that aims to link the efforts and coordination between the factions.

Mohammad Othman, a media official from the Syrian Liberation Front, reported that the Front and the other factions formed a joint operations room about two weeks earlier, without giving it a title, to coordinate and unify efforts, while at the same time denying the formation of a new Jaysh al-Fateh in the area.

The media relations manager from the al-Sham Legion of the National Liberation Front reported that there has been no official announcement of the new formation so far, saying that what people are circulating are only rumors.

Omar Hudaifah, the head of the Sharia office of the National Liberation Front, reported that he had not heard about this new formation yet, saying that it is unlikely that a new operations room has been formed while the National Liberation Front has an operations room that is functional and willing to include any faction.

On March 24, 2015, the major opposition factions operating in Northern Syria unified their efforts in an operations room under the name Jaysh al-Fateh, to expel the loyalist forces from Idlib. The factions of the Jaysh al-Fateh operations room gained total control of the city of Idlib only four days after the their unification.
