Turkey - SMART

The Syrian documentary feature Cries from Syria is nominated for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Cries from Syria website congratulated the film crew for nominations for Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary, Outstanding Research, Outstanding Writing, and Outstanding Music and Sound.

Cries from Syria tells the story of the Syrian revolution since its beginning until the formation of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), which advanced against the Syrian government and Russia. The Syrian government could not fight the FSA without Russian support, so Russian warplanes bombed Syrian cities, towns, and villages, killing and injuring thousands of civilians, mostly women and children. The Russian and Syrian government forces' bombings displaced millions of Syrians inside Syria; however, seven million Syrians also fled to neighboring countries, Europe and North America.

The Emmy Award recognizes original and high quality television productions, and was first awarded in 1949. The Emmy Award for television productions is what the Academy Award is for feature films, Grammy Award for music, and Tony Award for broadway theatre.

The Last Men in Aleppo documentary from 2017 was nominated for the Academy Award. The film depicts the work of the Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, during intense Syrian government and Russian airstrikes against the neighborhoods of Aleppo, Northern Syria.
