Al-Raqqa - SMART

The Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) seized civilian houses in a newly established "security place" in the city of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria.

On Sunday, local sources told SMART that the YPG seized the houses of about 24 families and prevented them from entering their houses in the area of youth housing in al-Raqqa. This area is located in a newly established "security place" including military, security and media centers.

The sources stated that the YPG established a concrete wall of about two and a half meters high. The entrance to the "security place" is restricted to those who have a security card inside the area to give it to the checkpoint at the main gate.

The sources added that the "security place" includes security and military headquarters for the YPG and the Kurdish intelligence and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The place also includes the headquarters of radio and stations close or affiliated to the YPG.

Families of SDF fighters, who were killed in battles to control the city against the Islamic State, also live in other houses in the youth housing area.

Last June, the Asayish forces of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration expelled families from their homes in the city of al-Raqqa under the pretext that the building is threatened of collapse.

Also, a source from the Asayish told SMART that YPG intelligence leaders seized 90 houses and a farm in the city of al-Tabaqa, on the pretext that its owners affiliated to ISIS.
