Homs - SMART

The agricultural yields declined in Northern Homs, Central Syria, due to the lack of rain.

A farmer, who introduced himself as Abu Azzam, said that he planted 10 acres with wheat and lost it due the delayed rainy season. He lost 50,000 Syrian Pounds (SYP), which led him to offer his land as pasture.

Another farmer introduced himself as Abu Adnan said that the pepper yield declined due to the lack of water, which led him to pay 150,000 SYP to draw water from a well, in addition to farming tools and fertilizers expenses.

This year, most of the farmers in Northern Homs reported the decline in the agricultural yields due to the lack of rain, compared to previous years, in addition to the lack of proper water and the high cost of drawing it.

The farmers also face several hardships with cultivating and plowing, due to the severe lack of rain.

Weather changes affect the agricultural production in different parts of Syria. The rising temperature destroyed 70% of the summer seasons in the towns and villages of the al-His mountain, Southern Aleppo; and the lack of water decreased the cultivated areas in al-Bab.
