Hama - SMART

The prices of real estate and house rentals have increased in the city of Hama, Central Syria, due to real estate agents' manipulation of the real estate market in the city, amidst the absence of Syrian government regulations.

Local sources reported that real estate agents prefer to sell houses and real estates to newly returned expatriates for high prices reaching more than 100 million Syrian pounds, rather than rent the houses to the displaced people residing in the city.

The sources added that the agents' business caused the rental costs to increase dramatically, reaching 100,000 SYP in the neighborhoods of al-Baath, al-Tatatin, western al-Mashtal and the al-Shariah and al-Barnawi areas. The rates increased from 30,000 to 50,000 SYP in other city neighborhoods.

According to the same sources, several poor families were forced to reside in unequipped commercial shops due to the lack of affordable housing.

People in the Syrian government-controlled areas complain about the high prices on all services and goods, including food supplies, amidst an absence of a Syrian government regulation and supply authorities.
