Aleppo - SMART

On Tuesday, the administrative staff and students of the school in the village of Qibar in the area of Afrin near Aleppo, Northern Syria, demonstrated to demand the release of detainees in the prisons of the Syrian government forces.

About 40 students with teachers in the school participated in the demonstration. They raised the flag of the Syrian revolution and banners reading, "Save the detainees from the Assad prisons ... Save the rest. Syria has exhausted all its youth."

One of the school's teachers told SMART that they organized a program to demonstrate throughout the eastern and northern countrysides of Aleppo to demand the release of detainees from the Syrian government's prisons.

On July 28, activists organized a sit-in in the city of al-Bab (38 kilometers east of Aleppo), in solidarity with the detainees who were died in the Syrian government's prisons.

The demonstrations came as the Syrian government started to reveal in July the fate of detainees in its prisons by listing the names of those killed in the civil registry or through its military police's contact with the detainees' relatives and telling them to receive the papers of the detainee who was killed.

Amnesty International has documented the deaths of more than 17,000 detainees in five years in the Syrian government's prisons. The Amnesty International referred to stories described as "terrifying" at the security branches of the Syrian government, according to a report published on its official website.
