Turkey, SMART

On Monday, the Free Syrian Army (FSA)’s and Opposition National Coalition’s delegation to the Astana 10 Talks said that the chance for extending the de-escalation zone agreement in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria, still existed.

When asked about the reason behind the delegations’ participation in the talks, despite the Syrian government and Russia’s lack of commitment to decisions from previous rounds of talks, Ayman al-’asimi, the head of the Media Committee of the delegation, answered saying that, "there is still an agreement on Idlib… and the Astana Agreement is related directly to Idlib. We still have the chance to extend the de-escalation agreement, which will expire soon.”

Al-'asimi added: "We hope that the agreement turns out to become an entire ceasefire and if that were to really happen, there would be a great chance to start political settlement seriously.”

Al-’asimi noted that the major issues the delegation will discuss are  to be Idlib, prisoners in the Syrian government’s prisons, and the constitutional committee.

Al-’asimi concluded by saying, "In my personal point of view, I think that the de-escalation agreement will be extended for a specific period, but I cannot specify that period before the Astana Talks end.”

Earlier on Monday, the Astana 10 Talks kicked off in the Russian city of Sochi. The delegations involved were representing the FSA, the Opposition National Coalition, the Syrian government, Russia, Turkey, and Iran in addition to Staffan De Mistura, the United Nations envoy to Syria.

Since mid-May 2017, the states inolved in the Astana Talks have been working with De Mistura to form a Syrian constitutional committee to formulate a new constitution for Syria.
