Aleppo - SMART

On Monday morning, people demonstrated against the "corruption and spoilers" in the local council of the city of Azaz, 43 kilometers north of Aleppo, Northern Syria. In the evening, another demonstration was launched in support of the council.

In the morning, the demonstrators raised the Syrian revolution and Turkish flags and banners expressing their rejection of the local council and corruption while calling for a fight against the council.

Local sources in the city stated that Azaz' residents did not participate in the demonstration, nor did members of the Ajil clan from the northern countryside of Azaz.

The sources stated that the security forces and the police in Azaz cordoned off the demonstration to protect the demonstrators, and deployed guards around the local council’s building to prevent it from being stormed. The demonstrators distributed roses to the council guards as proof of their nonviolence.

On Monday evening, dozens of people demonstrated in support of the council. The pro-council protesters were protected by the military police and raised banners reading, "The Turkish state represents me. The local council represents me."

SMART received a statement from families in the city refusing to take part in the demonstrations. The families considered what was happening as "tribal disputes." The families who signed the statements are the al-Darbala family, the al-Karaz family, the al-Taweel family, the al-Zabout family, the al-Mustaw family, the al-Ashawi family, the al-Areed family, the al-Wasi family, and the al-Hamoush family.

The families stressed that the decision to form a Shura Council for the city and to hold its members accountable is "a matter for Azaz’ residents only."

Last Saturday, the al-Ajeel tribe and the Third Corps of the Free Syrian Army accused the local council of Azaz of corruption. The council replied that the corruption is a result of their refusal to favorize certain families by employing their members.
