Idlib - SMART

The museum of Idlib reopens after years of closure due to the war and unstable situation in the governorate, Northern Syria.

Ayman Nabou, the museum manager, said that the museum closed in 2012 and the Syrian government forces bombed it after the Free Syrian Army and Islamist battalions gained control of Idlib. Nabou noted the bombings destroyed parts of the museum.

Nabou added that they reopened the museum on Monday, after unknown robbers got in due to poor museum security.

Nabou noted that the museum maintenance started in early 2018, and after six months, 70 percent of the museum was rehabilitated. Nabou added that they prepared the basement and ground floor for the final stages of the rehabilitation.

Nabou noted that the biggest difficulty they face in rehabilitating the museum is the lack of financial support from organizations.

The archaeologist Fayiz Qaswarah said that the museum includes valuable artifacts dating back to the Stone Age, Antiquity, Middle Ages, and modern time. Qaswarah added that the museum will display paintings that were not displayed before by Syrian artists who won international awards.

Earlier, the Salvation Government issued a decision to prevent excavations and transporting soil from areas that include historic monuments in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria.

Earlier, Nabou stated that they keep 1,700 artifacts in Idlib for fear of losing them. Nabou added that they documented the smuggling of artifacts from Syria to other countries.

Idlib includes many historic monuments including mosques, bridges, and others; however, the Russian-backed Syrian government forces bombed most of the monuments, destroying significant parts of them. Residents, volunteers, and civil groups organized campaigns to rehabilitate the monuments.
