Idlib - SMART

On Wednesday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) released the military relief official in the Elite Army after he was detained for over a year.

Activists told SMART that the HTS released the military relief official named Wael al-Ghabi, who was arrested at the end of July 2017 on charges of stealing money and weapons. Others said that the reason for the arrest was based on a complaint from a person whom al-Ghabi allegedly owed 200,000 US dollars.

Al-Ghabi's date of release and place of detention were known to the public; however, his brother Alaa is currently being held without information about his release and location, according to activists.

In June 2016, the HTS arrested al-Ghabi with his brother and dozens of other fighters after storming their headquarters in the city of Kafr Nubl and the villages of Hazarin and Maarrat Hamra in Idlib, according to activists.

Al-Ghabi is from the village of Qulidin in Western Hama. Al-Ghabi is the brother of the former commander of the former Tahrir Army, Mohammed al-Ghabi, and was an official in the army's military relief department.

In 2017, the Tahrir Army announced its merging with new battalions. The Tahrir Army changed its name to the Elite Army after its General Commander Mohammed Ahmed al-Ghabi was killed.
