Al-Hasakah - SMART

On Wednesday, residents of the city of al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria, complained of the poor quality of bread produced by the Kurdish Autonomous Administration's bread bakeries.

Ismail (not his real name), one of the residents of the Talaiy'a neighborhood, told SMART, "All neighborhoods suffer to secure the bread, especially in our neighborhood. We get the bread from middlemen and it is usually not fresh. People do not have the financial means to buy the "tourist" bread bag from private bakeries at the price of 200 Syrian pounds, which contains eight loaves only."

Ismail added that they are forced to buy bread from private bakeries to get a better quality after waiting for several hours to get bread (at the public bakeries). The price of a bread bag from the public bakeries is 125 SYP and contains 14 loaves.

One of the bread-selling middlemen in the city, Abdul Kader Abu Salim, stated that he writes down the names of those who want to buy cold bread for 125 SYP, though most people prefer the "tourist bread" due to its good quality.

SMART tried to communicate with the Supply Authority of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration in al-Hasakah to find out why the bread is scarce and poor-quality, but the Authority refused the phone call.
