Hama - SMART

People complain of "negligence and maltreatment by medical staff" at the al-Assad University Hospital for Children in the city of Hama, Central Syria.

On Thursday, witnesses told SMART that the medical staff at the al-Assad Children's Hospital in the al-Manakh neighborhood in Hama, deliberately neglect patients in the absence of supervision by the Syrian government. Children's parents complain of the lack of doctors on Fridays and Saturdays.

Witnesses added that the nurses at the hospital "humiliate" the patients and tell them to go to private hospitals in the city. The witnesses said that the hospital lacks good hygiene and services, and that it has gotten "a very bad reputation."

Witnesses presented several examples of neglect during the night shift. Nurses refuse to provide medicine to sick children, despite ther critical condition. The witnesses added, "There are no feelings among the staff and they do not care about the crying of the mothers of the children."

Residents of the city of Hama complain about the absence of Syrian government services, including the spread of garbage, expensive electricity, and the spread of theft and kidnappings.
