Turkey - SMART

Hundreds of people from the city of Azaz in Aleppo, Northern Syria, took part in a peaceful demonstration to demand the re-election of the local council of Azaz. Later, the demonstration turned into a sit-in.

Witnesses told SMART that there were about 1,000 protesters. The protesters raised the flag of the Syrian revolution and banners calling for the "Overthrow of the council," amid calls to the rest of the people of Azaz to join the sit-in.

Activists circulated a video showing the director of the medical office in Azaz local council, Moayad Qutour, on July 14. In the video, Qutour announced his resignation due to "corruption in the local council and at the will of the people of Azaz."

Two days ago, dozens of members of the al-Ajeel tribe demonstrated against "corruption and spoilers" in the Azaz local council. In the evening, another demonstration was launched in support of the council.

Last Saturday, the al-Ajeel tribe and the Third Corps of the Free Syrian Army accused the local council of Azaz of corruption. The council responded saying that the corruption is a result of their refusal to favorize certain families by employing their members.
