Idlib - SMART

On Friday, local activists told SMART that the Turkish forces vowed to take action if the Syrian government forces tried to advance west of Idlib, Northern Syria.

This came at a meeting held by a delegation of members of the political department from the city of Jisr al-Shughur with the Turkish forces at the observation base near the village of Ashtabraq. They discussed the military and service situation. Turkey will implement service projects in the area, according to activists.

The activists added that the Turkish forces gave assurances to the delegation that they would not allow the Syrian government to break into the area and if it tries they "will take the necessary measures to prevent it."

Residents of Idlib are afraid of the Syrian government forces and Russia's invasion after an intense bombing campaign returned throughout the governorate, killing and wounding about 50 civilians a few days ago. Earlier, the Syrian government threatened on the tongue of President Bashar al-Assad to launch a campaign to seize Idlib and areas outside his control in Lattakia.

The governorate of Idlib is included in the de-escalation agreement signed by the sponsors of the Astana talks (Turkey, Russia and Iran). Many Turkish and Russian military bases were established in the governorate to monitor the agreement.
