Al-Raqqa - SMART

On Saturday, a landmine, left behind by the Islamic State (IS), exploded in the city of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria, killing a civilian and injuring another.

A local source reported that the landmine exploded in the neighborhood of the State Security. The explosion injured two civilians, one of them died due to his severe injuries, and the other received injuries in his shoulder and waist and was transported to the Modern Medicine Hospital.

On June 22, 2018, a landmine explosion killed a member of the demining engineering team of al-Raqqa's civil council of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration. The member was disposing of a landmine in the city of al-Raqqa.

Last year, local activists documented the killing of 155 civilians, including 20 women and 15 children, in the city of al-Raqqa due to explosions of landmines left behind by IS. The demining engineering teams of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) removed around 7,300 landmines, after the SDF took control of the city.
