Rif Dimashq - SMART

On Sunday, the Syrian government's political security branch seized the city of al-Tal in the Rif Dimashq governorate, Southern Syria, putting an end to local loyalist militias in the city.

A local source reported that the political security branch seized the city of al-Tal after they put an end to the presence of the loyalist militias, the most prominent of which was the al-Qalamoun Shield militia. The political security branch suspended the commander of the al-Qalamoun Shield militia Nasir Shamu's work and removed all militia checkpoints from the city.

The source added that the political security branch sent the loyalist militia members to the frontlines against the Islamic State in Deir ez-Zor, Eastern Syria. The source noted that the political security branch took the weapons from the members whom the terms of compulsory or reserve military service did not apply to.

In recent months, the political security and aerial security branches clashed with members of the al-Qalamoun Shield and al-Tal Protection, the latter of which was formed by militants who used to fight the Syrian government forces.

The source noted that the political security branch in cooperation with the criminal security branch established temporary checkpoints in al-Tal. The source added that the political security branch closed all militia headquarters in the city a month and a half ago.

The source noted that the militias gained control of al-Tal after the Free Syrian Army factions evacuated the city as part of a displacement agreement in late 2016. The presence of the political security branch was limited to the Ma’arba, Tayba, and al-Banorama checkpoints on the perimeter of al-Tal.

The Republic Guards, which belong to the Syrian government forces, ordered the formation of local militias in al-Tal in October 2017. The Republic Guards promised the recruits that they would not send them to fight with the Syrian government forces in different areas of Syria.

The source concluded by saying that the Syrian government forces put an end to the presence of militias in all villages in the al-Qalamoun area and integrated the militia members to the Third Division of the Syrian government forces stationed in al-Qutayfah.

The Syrian government forces launched arrest campaigns against civilians, including women, who remained in al-Tal after the Syrian government forces and loyalist militias seized the city. The Syrian government forces and loyalist militias looted civilian properties worth millions of Syrian pounds.
