Hama - SMART

Farmers’ profits decrease by half in areas outside Syrian government control in Northern and Western Hama, Central Syria, as the Syrian government forces continue to keep the Qal’at al-Madiq crossing closed.

A week ago, the Syrian government forces closed the Qal’at al-Madiq crossing between the areas controlled by the Free Syrian Army and Islamist battalions and those controlled by the Syrian government in Western Hama, Central Syria. Activists suspected that the Syrian government forces closed the crossing following a disagreement with Russian troops.

A farmer from the town of Kafr Nabudah, who introduced himself as Abu Hamza, said that the profits of his crops of eggplant and pepper were reduced by half as he will only earn 2 million Syrian pounds after closing the crossing.

Abu Hamza added that the prices of pepper decreased from 150 to 65 SYP per kilo after the closing of the crossing. Abu Hamza added that the prices of eggplant decreased from 90 to 50 SYP per kilo.

The farmer Omar al-Haj Ahmad, who owns ten acres of eggplants and pepper in the village of al-Jabriya, suffered a significant loss due to the closing of the crossing. Al-Haj Ahmad spent one million SYP on cultivating the crop.

Al-Haj Ahmad added that the last time he sold pepper he received 60 SYP per kilo, but he needs to sell the pepper for 90 SYP to make up for his investment.

The prices of food increased in areas controlled by the Syrian government forces in the Hama governorate due to the closing of the crossing.
