France - SMART

The President of the Progressive Socialist Party in Lebanon, Walid Jumblatt, sent letters to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense to discuss the case of the women kidnapped by the Islamic State (IS) in al-Suwayda, Southern Syria.

The Progressive Socialist Party's media commission reported that Jumblatt focused in his letters to Sergey Lavrov and Sergey Shoygu on the case of the kidnapped women from al-Suwayda. Jumblatt expressed his support to the Russian efforts to release the kidnapped women.

Earlier, the Negotiations Commission for the kidnapped women from al-Suwayda reported that Russia intervened directly as a guarantor to ensure the release of the kidnapped women, after the IS demanded Russia's intervention.

Jumblatt, in referring to the Syrian government's role in blocking the Russian negotiations, said that the negotiations have been subject to obstruction and sabotage more than once by more than one party seeking to exploit it.

Jumblatt also implied that the Syrian government seeks to delay the solution in order to subjugate the Syrian Druze and engage them in the Syrian government's battle outside al-Suwayda, especially in Idlib. The Syrian government recently revealed plans to launch a military operation in Idlib.

The letters to Russia followed the visit of the President of the Democratic Assembly and Jumblatt's son, Timur Jumblatt, to Moscow, and his meeting with the Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhail Bogdanov. Jumblatt Jr. and Bogdanov discussed the case of the kidnapped women.

Earlier, Walid Jumblatt said that he seeks to keep good relations with Russia as a guarantee for the people of al-Suwayda to stay in the Jabal area and to prevent Bashar al-Assad from using them for his personal gain.

The people of the governorate of al-Suwayda, which includes a majority of Druze, are waiting for news of the women and children kidnapped by the IS after the latter attacked Eastern al-Suwayda on July 25, 2018. The IS killed and injured hundreds of people during the attack, most of them civilians.
