Idlib - SMART

On Sunday, a court pardoned 20 prisoners in the city of Maarrat al-Nu’man in Southern Idlib, Northern Syria.

Mustafa Rahal, the head of the court, which belongs to the Syrian National Liberation Front, stated that the pardon is due to the Eid al-Adha holiday, which starts on Tuesday. Rahal noted that the pardon will enter into force on Monday.

SMART obtained a circulation from the court saying that the pardon is only for prisoners who have served at least half their sentence.

The pardon excludes prisoners who committed "sins against God," prisoners sentenced for religious penalty, and prisoners accused of working against the revolution.

Prisoners convicted of fraud are not pardoned until after they pay back the money they owe. Prisoners convicted in absentia are required to surrender to the court within 15 days.

In June 2017, the Salvation Government operating in areas controlled by the opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Northern Syria released prisoners under a general pardon.
