Idlib - SMART

The Syrian government imposes high fees on people passing through the Abu al-Zuhur crossing in Idlib, Northern Syria. The Syrian government opened the crossing on Monday. The crossing connects the Syrian government-controlled areas and those outside its control in Southern Idlib.

Activists reported that the Syrian government reopened the crossing after closing it for a long time. The activists added that Russian military police officers are stationed at the crossing.

Hasan al-Khalif, the head of the local council of the town of Abu al-Zuhur, in which the crossing is located, stated that the people were surprised when the Syrian government forces required fees to enter the government-controlled areas, after announcing that it would be free.

Al-Khalif added that the Syrian government charges one and a half million Syrian pounds for each combine harvester and excavator, 300,000 SYP for a car and 15,000 SYP for each head of livestock.

Al-Khalif noted that around 100 vehicles passed through the crossing, and 30 others are waiting to enter tomorrow.

In June, dozens of internally displaced families returned to the Syrian government-controlled areas in Idlib, Aleppo and Hama, through the Abu al-Zuhur crossing. The al-Sham Brigade and the Syrian government forces supervised the crossing.
