Rif Dimashq - SMART

The high prices of clothes and desserts prevent many people from shopping in Western al-Qalamun in Rif Dimashq, as the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha approaches.

On Monday, local sources reported that over the last days, people have been frequenting markets in the Syrian government forces-controlled cities of al-Tal, al-Nabk, and Yabrud as Eid al-Adha approaches; however, many people could not afford the goods for the holiday due to high prices.

The sources added that the prices of clothes and desserts increased, but families' incomes remain low. The average income of a family in Rif Dimashq is 50,000 Syrian pounds (100 US dollars).

The sources noted that one kilogram of high-quality Arabic desserts cost between 2,500 and 10,000 SYP, and one kilogram of high-quality chocolate costs between 3,000 to 9,000 SYP.

The high prices force people to buy cheaper sweets, including date biscuits, pistachio and sesame biscuits, and dough cookies at 2,500 SYP per kilo.

The sources added that the price of children's clothing also increased, and a t-shirt costs between 1,500 and 3,000 SYP, a pair of pants between 3,000 and 5,000 SYP, and a pair of shoes up to 7,000 SYP. The price of women's clothing also increased, and a coat costs between 10,000 and 30,000 SYP.

The prices of cattle and sheep for sacrifice have increased in most of the Syrian governorates, amidst harsh economic conditions and low incomes.
