The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the situation in Idlib is dire with more than half a million displaced people residing in the governorate's cities and towns in Northwestern Syria.

In the statement, the WHO appealed for 11,000,000 US dollar funding to provide health care and save people's lives in areas of Idlib, Hama, Aleppo, Idlib, and Latakia. Many internally displaced persons (IDPs) are living in makeshift, overcrowded shelters with little access to health care, safe water, and sanitation, according to WHO. The WHO added, "The health situation in north-west Syria is already dire and If WHO does not receive additional funding, more than two million people caught in the cross-fire may have no access to essential health care services, including life-saving trauma care.”

WHO said it would use any additionally received donor funds to support primary health care, childhood vaccination and trauma services in north-west Syria; and to strengthen referral systems to transfer critically ill and wounded patients to hospitals for specialized care.

Over that last year, people in the governorate of Idlib suffered from a lack of medical support, as intensified bombings by Russia and the loyalist forces forced many hospitals, Civil Defense's centers, and emergency systems to shut down.

Moreover, a decline in vaccination coverage rates threatens renewed outbreaks of preventable diseases, such as polio, according to the WHO.

The WHO added that a gap in funding for health had placed millions of vulnerable Syrians at increased risk.

Earlier, a senior U.N. official warns of a bloodbath if a full-scale war breaks out in Idlib, as he said, "We cannot allow war to go to Idlib."

These statements came after reports that the Syrian government mobilized its forces to launch a military operation on Idlib, coinciding with the intensified bombing of different areas in Idlib, killing and injuring around 50 civilians.
