Al-Raqqa - SMART

On Monday, an unidentified remnant of war killed a child in the village of al-Raqqa al-Samra in Eastern al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria.

A source from the Kurdish Red Crescent reported that an unidentified device exploded and killed an eight-year-old child in northern al-Raqqa al-Samra. The child's body was broken into pieces by the bomb.

The source did not clarify the nature of the device, neither did he mention whether it was a landmine planted by the Islamic State, a remnant from Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), or International Coalition bombing. The source merely said, “It was a small object the size of a small cluster bomb, which is the same size as a mortar detonator.”

SMART received photos showing SDF fighters throwing war remnants from small boats near an old bridge over the Euphrates river. SDF sources reported that the remnants were already dismantled in the city of al-Raqqa.

Local activists accuse the SDF and their civil council of failing to remove thousands of landmines in al-Raqqa, which have killed and injured thousands of civilians. The SDF and the council have allowed civilians to return to their homes at their own risk. The demining team reported that they removed thousands of landmines.
