Turkey - SMART

On the fifth anniversary of the chemical massacre in Eastern Ghouta, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France warned the Syrian government that they will take action if it continues to use chemical weapons in Syria.

On the morning of Aug. 21, 2013, the Syrian government forces used sarin gas on Eastern Ghouta, killing hundreds of civilians.

In a joint statement published on the Syrian U.S. embassy's Twitter account, the three countries said that they would "respond appropriately" if the Syrian government continues to use chemical weapons, which caused "devastating humanitarian consequences for the Syrian people."

The countries welcomed the launch of the International Partnership Against Impunity Convention on the use of chemical weapons. The countries also called on the Syrian government's allies to force it to comply with international bodies related to the use of such weapons.

The countries added that they are "worried" about reports on a military attack by the Syrian government against civilians and infrastructure in Idlib, Northern Syria, and its humanitarian consequences.

The Syrian government began to mobilize its forces in the governorates of Idlib and Hama after the Syrian President's threats to storm the areas outside his control in Northern and Eastern Syria.
