Idlib - SMART

On Wednesday, the National Liberation Front (NLF) released employees of the Turkey Diyanet Foundation, hours after they were arrested in the city of Maarrat al-Nu'man, south of Idlib, Northern Syria.

The Response Coordinators team in Northern Syria, which is concerned with humanitarian affairs for refugees and forcibly displaced people, said that one of the opposition factions attacked a team from the Turkey Diyanet Foundation as they were working in a slaughterhouse in the city (livestock sacrifice is a major ritual in Eid al-Adha).

Local activists said that the fighters belong to the NLF, which controls the city.

The Response Coordinators team added that the fighters arrested some employees, including Turks, and confiscated their equipment and meat in the slaughterhouse. The fighters released them after a few hours.

The Response Coordinators team called on the opposition factions to hold those responsible for these "irresponsible" actions accountable and to spare civilians from the conflicts between them.

The Turkey Diyanet Foundation is a governmental organization established by the Turkish Presidency of Religious affairs in 1975. The organization provides humanitarian and relief assistance to Muslims in various countries experiencing war and famine.

The opposition factions and the Islamist battalions regularly arrest humanitarian and health workers. On Tuesday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham arrested a volunteer in the Violet Organization in Idlib.
