Hama - SMART

Ten days ago, the Syrian government closed the Qalat al-Madiq crossing in Hama, Central Syria, depriving the people living in Syrian government-controlled areas from visiting their relatives and cemeteries in areas outside Syrian government control.

One of the residents of the village of Brideej, Mahmoud al-Hamdan, stated that the closure of the crossing from the Syrian government-controlled side deprived his parents from visiting his uncle and brother’s graves in the Shahshabo mountainous area. Al-Hamdan's uncle and brother were killed during a Syrian government airstrike. Al-Hamdan added that visiting family graves tombs is the most important ritual of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha.

Another resident, Salim al-Ahmad, stated that the closure of the crossing during Eid al-Adha prevented his in-laws from visiting them as usual, like many other families.

Eid al-Adha is the second major holiday in Islam, falling on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah of the lunar calendar, a day after the Day of Arafat when Muslim pilgrims perform the Hajj pilgrimage. Eid  al-Adha ends on the 14th of Dhul Hijjah. The most important ritual is to sacrifice livestock, visit the dead, relatives, and friends.

Activists and local sources suspected that the Syrian government closed the crossing due to disagreements between Russia and the Syrian government forces' Fourth Division. The disagreement started because of the Russian forces' unwanted administration of the crossing, as the Fourth Division refused to aid the Russian forces.

Before the crossing's closure, the Russian forces and the Fourth Division opened the crossing for a few hours and allowed civilians and employees to enter before closing it again.

The closure of the crossing has resulted in enormous financial losses for farmers, estimated around half in the areas outside Syrian government control in Northern and Western Hama. The price of food also increased as a result of the closure.
