Al-Raqqa - SMART

A civilian was tortured to death in a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) prison near the city of al-Raqqa in Northeastern Syria.

One of the civilian’s relatives stated that last Sunday, the SDF arrested the 34-year-old Hamoud al-Ahmad from the village of Mazraat al-Ansar for being a former member of the Islamic State. The relative continued, "(...) but in reality they arrested him because of a tribal disagreement with another person who became powerful in the SDF."

The relative added that the SDF delivered the body to the national hospital of al-Tabaqa. The body had torturing signs on his legs, his private parts, and there was a hole on the left side of his chest.

SDF officials did not respond to SMART's attempts to interview them about the incidence.

Earlier, an SDF member shot a civilian in central al-Raqqa.

Activists and civilians accuse the Kurdish People's Protection Units of not securing al-Raqqa. The accusations follow the spread of robbery and kidnapping incidents. Residents also accused SDF members of looting houses and seizing private properties.
