Idlib - SMART

A group of political bodies and figures prepare to announce the formation of the Popular Resistance in parts of the governorates of Hama and Idlib, Central and Northern Syria.

On Wednesday, one of the leaders of the Popular Resistance, Judge Mohammad Nur Hamidi, told SMART that they reached the final stages of preparation before announcing the formation. Judge Hamidi expects the announcement to be made after the end of Eid al-Adha.

Judge Hamidi stated that the announcement of the formation was delayed because they tried to merge the Popular Resistance project with the Revolutionary Forum (the Revolutionary Resistance), but if the merger fails, they will announce the formation immediately after the Eid.

Judge Hamidi added that he met with the head of the Revolutionary Resistance, but some issues prevented them from merging "because the latter needs to consider a group of people before making the decision."

Judge Hamidi added that the formation of the Popular Resistance includes media, legal and military figures from among the dissidents from the Syrian government forces and those who did not engage in any (opposition) faction. The Popular Resistance aims to overthrow the Syrian government and defeat any attempt by its forces in Idlib and Hama.

Judge Hamidi said, "The formation is independent, has no external links and a neutral attitude towards all military factions (...) and is based on the principle of self-support from those who join it."

Judge Hamidi stated that they are trying to gather the largest number of authorities and personalities in the formation, which will also be joined by a number of forcibly displaced people from Eastern Ghouta and Homs to Northern Syria, as well as people from al-Raqqa.

Judge Hamidi stated that the figures and authorities with whom they contacted do not mind joining them to avoid repeating what happened in the rest of the governorates seized by the Syrian government forces after agreements to displace the people and reconcile with the rest. Also, a number of women asked to join the formation, according to Hamidi.

Judge Hamidi refused to disclose the number of those joining the formation, saying, "This is one of the secrets that cannot be declared, but the number is large."

The formation is spread in five areas in the governorate of Idlib, including the cities of Idlib, Harim, Ariha, Jisr al-Shughur and Maarrat al-Nu'man, in addition to an area in the northern countryside of Hama. Five people represent each area and the leadership is elected among them, according to Judge Hamidi.

On Aug. 9, people announced the Popular Revolutionary Resistance during a forum of Revolutionary Activists in Hama in the town of Hass in Idlib.

The formation follows the Syrian President's threats to launch a campaign to seize the governorate of Idlib and areas outside his control in Latakia, after his forces seized most of the governorates of Daraa and Quneitra in Southern Syria, with Russian support.
