Idlib - SMART

On Thursday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) seized the headquarters of a the Ansar al-Sham Battalion in the village of Ain al-Baiyda near the city of Jisr al-Shughur in Western Idlib, Northern Syria.

Local sources told SMART that a large HTS convoy entered the village and seized the headquarters of the Ansar al-Sham Battalion and its checkpoints, without direct clashes with the battalion.

The sources added that the Ansar al-Sham tried to secede from the HTS last week; however, the HTS' internal system prevents dissident battalions from keeping their headquarters and checkpoints.

The sources stated that there were no casualties during the clashes between the two parties, and that the Ansar al-Sham fighters remained in their homes with their personal weapons.

In early 2017, the HTS was formed from the merging of several Islamist battalions, most notably the Fateh al-Sham (formerly al-Nusra Front), now led by Abu Muhammad al-Julani.
