Al-Suwayda - SMART

On Friday, the Syrian government forces clashed with the Islamic State (IS) in the desert of al-Suwayda, Southern Syria. The IS killed seven members of the Syrian government forces and wounded 89 others, according to the a source from the al-Suwayda National Hopsital.

Informed sources told SMART that infantry members of the Syrian government forces tried to advance to IS sites in the Safa area in the desert, but they were caught in ambushes prepared by the IS. The military vehicles of the Syrian government could not advance to the region due to its ruggedness.

The sources stated that the attempt to advance came after the Syrian government monitored the movements of children and women in the region who were suspected to have been kidnapped from al-Suwayda by the IS.

Earlier, the Syrian government forces and their loyalist militia seized the al-Ameera and al-Banat Landmarks in the Safa area.

On July 25, 2018, with no Syrian government forces in the region, the IS attacked the city of al-Suwayda and villages in its eastern countryside, killing and wounding hundreds of people and kidnapping some women.
