Al-Raqqa - SMART

More than 100 people showed poisoning symptoms in the al-Thakanah neighborhood in the city of al-Raqqa. Reports about the reasons for the poisoning cases were contradictive.

Medical sources reported that families' members showed poisoning symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, high temperature, fatigue, and abdominal pain.

Local sources assumed that the reasons behind the poisoning cases are the water that the Kurdish Autonomous Administration provided on the first day of the Eid al-Adha holiday. Other sources said that the reason is polluted water that a restaurant offered for free.

The sources clarified that some poisoned patients visited doctors and hospital for treatment, while other patients could not go to the hospital due to harsh economic conditions.

A local reported that a medical examination in a hospital costs up to 5,000 Syrian pounds and in a doctor's clinic up to 8,000 SYP.

Locals demanded the city's officials to provide treatment or mobile medical teams.

On Aug. 8, 2018, the al-Raqqa local council of the Syrian Democratic Council determined costs of medical services provided in al-Raqqa hospitals and imposed a penalty if breached.
