Idlib – SMART

On Monday, the Syrian pound weakened to the US dollar by increasing by 14 SYP in the governorate of Idlib, Northern Syria, because the loyalist forces are expected to launch a military operation in the area.

Muhammad al-Anwar, the owner of a currency exchange store in the city of Kafr Nubl, reported that the USD exchange rate to the SYP increased by 14 SYP. 1 USD increased to 458 SYP for sale after being 444 SYP, and 456 SYP for purchase after being 442 SYP.

Al-Anwar said that the reason for weakening of the SYP is that the USD is not available in the area. Al-Anwar added that loyalist forces' preparations for a military operation also caused the weakening.

The Syrian government continues to send reinforcements, including tanks, BMPs, armored vehicles, and cannons, to the perimeter of the Idlib governorate, which remains outside the loyalist forces' control.

The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad threatened to launch a military campaign to seize Idlib and the areas outside the loyalist forces' control in Latakia. Recenlty, the Syrian government forces, supported by Russia, seized the governorates of Daraa and Quneitra in Southern Syria.
