Aleppo - SMART

On Monday, local political bodies agreed to form a new local council in the city of Azaz in Aleppo, Northern Syria, in the presence of the current local council and organizers of a sit-in that had demanded its resignation.

The Azaz local community organized the meeting and representatives of about 110 families attended. The attendees discussed the mechanisms of forming a new local council after recent developments demanding the dismissal of the current council, which announced its dissolution yesterday.

The Head of the current council of Azaz, Mohamed Kenou, announced their readiness to hand the council over one day after the formation of the new council, which he said "is elected by the people of the city."

The attendants agreed to form a public body in two days, including one representative from each family in Azaz, "however big (the family) is." The body's task is to form a new council consisting of members with university degrees and a good reputation.

Last week and the week before, civilians from the city of Azaz demonstrated calling for the replacement of the local council after it was accused of corruption. Later, the demonstration turned into an open sit-in in front of the council's headquarters. The demonstrators rejected the Turkish Army's request to break up the sit-in.

The dispute began after the al-Ajeel tribe and the Third Corps of the Free Syrian Army accused the local council of Azaz of corruption. The council responded saying that the corruption is a result of their refusal to favorize certain families by employing their members.
