Turkey, SMART

On Tuesday, Syrian government forces arrested university students in Damascus amidst protests against a Syrian government decision to cancel a complimentary exam session.

Pro Syrian government media outlets reported that dozens of university students gathered at the al-Umawyeen (Umayyad) Square near the presidential palace, central Damascus. The students demand the Syrian government retracts the decision.

The media outlets added that the Syrian government deployed members of the Syrian government forces to the square and arrested students on charges of illegal protesting.

Imad Khamis, the Syrian government prime minister, confirmed that they would not retract the decision to cancel the complimentary exam session. Khamis justified the decision by saying that the universities restored their previous status before the war.

Since the start of the revolution, the Syrian government has conducted arrest campaigns to suppress oppositionists. The Syrian government exploited students’ unions in universities to conduct systematic arrests and torture against oppositionist students.
