Deir Ez-Zor - SMART

On Tuesday, the Islamic State (IS) executed nine IS members from Iraq in the village of al-Shu'fa in Eastern Deir ez-Zor, Eastern Syria.

A local source reported that the IS shot nine of its members from Iraq on charges of following the Kharijite school of thought. The source added that the members included two security members, three members from the Islamic Police, and a member of the al-Hisba service; however, the source did not report any details about the other members.

The source noted that there are internal disagreements among IS members in Eastern Deir ez-Zor. Local and Iraqi IS members accuse foreign IS members (Muhajireen) of being Kharijites; however, the latter accuse the local IS members of apostasy, being non-believers, and not following God’s laws, according to the source.

The IS frequently executes IS members after the size of IS-controlled areas shrank in Deir ez-Zor. IS' presence is now limited to a few towns that are besieged by the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian government forces.

In early May 2018, the IS suppressed a mutiny lead by Abu Shuaib al-Hadrami. The rebellious IS members accused the IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and IS' first ranks of having a weak jihadi creed and policies that caused the IS' legitimacy to weaken.
