Aleppo - SMART

Tensions rose between the opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Syrian National Liberation Front on Tuesday after the HTS established a checkpoint near another checkpoint belonging to the National Liberation Front in Western Aleppo, Northern Syria.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

The Syrian National Liberation Front is an opposition group formed by the two Sunni Islamist groups Ahrar al-Sham and the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement. HTS is the main rival of the Syrian Liberation Front in Northwestern Syria.

A spokesperson for the Nour al-Din al-Zinki movement reported that the HTS established a checkpoint 50 meters away from a checkpoint controlled by the National Liberation Front between the towns of al-Abzimo and Taqad. The spokesperson added that this action caused tension between the two factions.

The HTS and Free Syrian Army factions, the most prominent of which is the Syrian Liberation Front, continue to clash on a regular basis in Western Aleppo, killing and injuring fighters on both sides as well as civilians.

On August 16, 2018, the HTS and National Liberation Front divided areas and checkpoints between them, but disputes continue to arise.
