Deir ez-Zor - SMART

On Tuesday, the United States diplomat William Roebuck promised the residents of the town of al-Basira in the Deir ez-Zor governorate, Eastern Syria, to provide the necessary support to reconstruct the town.

Khalaf al-As'ad, the deputy head of the legislative council belonging to the Deir ez-Zor civil council reported that Roebuck promised to provide more services and support to reconstruct al-Basira and other areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Deir ez-Zor. Al-As'ad noted that the priority would be rehabilitating the town's infrastructure.

Ghassan al-Yusuf, the head of the legislative council, reported that Roebuck promised to sustain security and stability in the area despite the "threats imposed by the Syrian government."

Roebuck's promises came during a visit to al-Basira. Roebuck met tribal leaders and representatives of councils and civil groups in Deir ez-Zor, in addition to the towns of Markadeh and al-Dashisha in Southern al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria.

Roebuck succeeded Brett McGurk on his diplomatic mission to Syria. McGurk visited areas controlled by the SDF in al-Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and al-Hasakah during his term of office.
