Turkey, SMART

On Thursday, Turkey stated that Ankara seeks to ensure the safety and security of four million people in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria before the de-escalation zone agreement collapses.

Hulusi Akar, Turkish foreign minister, delivered a speech in Ankara saying, that Turkey seeks to stop the Syrian government forces attack on Idlib and to deliver aid without restrictions, according to Anadolu news agency.

Akar added that Ankara would continue the necessary discussions to sustain people’s safety in Idlib, on the diplomatic and military levels.

On Wednesday, the United Nations warned that 800,000 civilians could be displaced in case the Syrian government forces attacked the Idlib governorate.

President Bashar al-Assad threatened to launch a military campaign to seize Idlib and other areas outside of the Syrian government forces control in Latakia. Assad’s threatens came after the  Russian backed Syrian government forces have seized most of the Daraa and Quneitra governorates in Southern Syria.

The de-escalation agreement reached by the governor states of the Astana Talks (Russia, Iran, and Turkey) includes the Idlib governorate. Russia and Turkey established outposts to monitor the implementation of the agreement in Idlib.
