Prices of food materials increase due to Syrian government taxes in Abu Kamal, Deir-Ez-Zor

On Thursday, prices of food materials scored drastic increase in the city of Abu Bukamal in Deir Ez-Zor, Eastern Syria as checkpoints of the Fourth Division of the Syrian government forces imposed customs taxes by 30 percent per cargo.

A local source reported that in recent days the prices of oil increased from 800 to 1,500 Syrian pounds (SYP) per liter and prices of rice increased from 800 to 1,300 SYP per kilo.

The source added that prices of sugar increased from 300 to 500 SYP per kilo and prices of potatoes increased to 200 SYP per kilo. The source noted that the costs of tomatoes increased to 1,500 SYP per kilo and prices of cucumbers and marrows increased to 200 SYP per kilo. The source indicated that the increase included all kinds of fruit and vegetables.

The source noted that the Syrian government forces checkpoints in al-Ashara and al-Salihiya areas imposed the taxes on the food materials. The source added that the checkpoints give traders receipts that prove that the traders paid the taxes.

Earlier, residents complaint about high prices of water in Abu Kamal as the prices of a cubic meter of water increased to 6,000 SYP.

On November 21, 2017, the Syrian government forces and loyalist militias seized Abu-Bukamal after the Islamic State withdrew.
