Deir Ez-Zor - SMART

The people of the Deir Ez-Zor governorate, Northeastern Syria, pay hundreds of thousands of Syrian pounds daily to cross between the Syrian government forces' areas and the areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which are the military forces of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration in Northern Syria, founded in 2015.

A local source reported that most of the people crossing the Euphrates River are Syrian government employees forced by the Syrian government to resume their jobs in the areas it controls, in addition to several families that desire to return home.

The source said that every day, about 500 people cross the river from the SDF-controlled areas to the Syrian government forces-controlled regions through the al-Shmeitiyah and Jdaydet Bakara crossings, adding that each person pays 500 SYP, while car owners pay about 5,000 SYP.

In Aug. 2018, Russia started to run the river crossings between the SDF and the Syrian government forces' areas in the Deir Ez Zor governorate, after the two parties concluded agreements to open the crossings for whoever desires to return to their homes in the Syrian government forces' areas.
