Turkey - SMART

On Monday, the Iranian Foreign Minister Muhammad Javad Zarif said during a surprise visit to the Syrian capital Damascus, that the governorate of Idlib should be "cleared" of (opposition) fighters, a reference to the military operation promoted by the Syrian government forces to seize the governorate.

During the visit, Zarif will meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the Prime Minister of the Syrian government, Imad Khamis, and the Foreign Minister, Walid al-Moualem.

The Iranian news agency Fars quoted Zarif as saying that Idlib should be cleared of terrorists and that it should be under the Syrian people's control again.

Zarif stated that cooperation between all parties and sectarian groups must begin to rebuild Syria and to return all forcibly displaced people to their families.

Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Bahram Qasimi, said that Zarif's visit to Syria aims to discuss the nearby military operation in Idlib. Qasimi stressed that Iran will continue to support and help the Syrian government in the operation.

This visit comes coincides with the Syrian government's announcement of mobilizing its forces to launch a military operation in Idlib. The Syrian government already bombed different parts of the governorate, killing and wounding about 50 civilians on Aug. 11, amid international calls to prevent the Syrian government from attacking Idlib.
