Homs - SMART

Dozens of families have left the al-Rakban camp, 300 kilometers southeast of Homs near the Syrian-Jordanian border. The families left the camp due to the lack of job opportunities and high prices of goods. The families headed for the Syrian government-controlled areas.

Abdullah al-Aqbah, the head of the humanitarian affairs at the al-Rakban camp, reported that about 350 families left the camp and headed for the cities of Palmyra and al-Qaryatayn. About 300 people left the camp and headed for the al-Mansura area in the last month, according to al-Aqbah.

Al-Aqbah said that the families and people are leaving the camp after they reconcile with the Syrian government forces via mediators from tribes' dignitaries with a Russian sponsorship.

In July 2017, about 500 families left the al-Rakban camp and headed for Palmyra and al-Qaryatayn due to the blocked roads leading to the camp, the lack of goods, high prices, and the lack of potable water.

Internally displaced persons residing in the al-Rakban camp suffer from the lack of basic services, declining health conditions, and poor educational facilities, despite the appeals of the Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations to the international community to respond to the declining humanitarian situation in the camp.
